2019

2019 begins with performances of Gianni Schicchi and Les mamelles de Tiresias at Royal Conservatoire in Scotland. Matthew Kofi has collaborated with director James Bonas and the students of the Opera School on two new productions.

Matthew Kofi returns to Opera Holland Park, and is reunited with director Rodula Gaitanou, as they continue their exploration of Verdi's middle period. Rehearsals for Un ballo in maschera begin April with performances throughout June.

Matthew Kofi makes a House and piece debut as he conducts La cenerentola at West Green House Opera in July.

Matthew Kofi returns to Opera North to conduct La boheme in the Autumn Season.

Matthew Kofi  makes his Queen Elizabeth Hall debut with the Chineke! Foundation in September 2019, conducting a varied programmed including Coleridge-Taylor's Petite suite de concert.

2018

2018 has been a busy year for Matthew Kofi, with highly successful debuts with both Opera North and English National Opera. Matthew Kofi recently returned to Opera Holland Park to conduct La traviata, which has opened to universal acclaim, hailed as the 'best La traviata to reach London in years. In July 2018, Matthew Kofi begins rehearsals for Paul Bunyan with English National Opera, and in November he returns to Glasgow to conduct a double of operas at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

2017
PAUL BUNYAN FOR ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA

In September 2018 Matthew Kofi returns to ENO to conduct Paul Bunyan at Wilton's Music Hall in London. The production is part of the acclaimed ENO Studio Live, and will be directed by Jamie Manton.

LA TRAVIATA SEASON OPENER AT OPERA HOLLAND PARK IN 2018

In April 2018 Matthew Kofi returns to the Opera Holland Park rehearsal room to collaborate with award-winning director Rodula Gaitanou and designer Cordelia Chisholm on a new production of La traviata. The production opens the OHP 2018 season, and the cast includes Lauren Fagan as Violetta, Matteo Desole as Alfredo, and Stephen Gadd as Pere Germont. The City of London Sinfonia and the chorus of Opera Holland Park play and sing respectively. Performances take place during 2018.

DON GIOVANNI AT OPERA NORTH IN 2018

Matthew Kofi Waldren's busy Spring season of Mozart continues with performances of Don Giovanni for Opera North. Matthew is delighted to be making his company debut, sharing conducting duties with Christoph Altstaedt. He conducts performances at both the Theatre Royal in Nottingham and Theatre Royal in Newcastle in March 2018, with rehearsals commencing in January 2018. DEBUT WITH ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA

In April 2018, Matthew Kofi Waldren will make his main stage debut at ENO, conducting a performance of The Marriage of Figaro.

MATTHEW A FINALIST IN THE INTERNATIONAL OPERA AWARDS 2017

Matthew Kofi is delighted to announce that he has been shortlisted as a finalist in the 'Newcomer' category of the International Opera Awards 2017. The ceremony will be held at the London Coliseum on 7th May 2017.

MATTHEW TO COLLABORATE WITH ARTIST KATE STEENHAUER

MATTHEW TRAVELS TO THE U.S.A. AS PART OF HIS ENO MACKERRAS FELLOWSHIP

Matthew spent two successful weeks in the  U.S.A. in November 2016. As part of his Fellowship he toured Opera Houses to meet the Music and Creative Teams at L.A. Opera, L.A. Phil, San Francisco Opera, and Seattle Opera.

MATTHEW RETURNS TO OPERA HOLLAND PARK TO CONDUCT LA RONDINE IN 2017

In La Rondine's centenary year, and after his acclaimed interpretation of La bohème, Matthew returns to Opera Holland Park in 2017 to conduct Puccini's late masterpiece. Elizabeth Llewellyn sings the role of Magda, and Matthew is thrilled to be reunited with the City of London Sinfonia.

MATTHEW ASSISTS MARK WIGGLESWORTH ON DON GIOVANNI AT ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA

In Autumn 2016, Matthew begins his tenure as Sir Charles Mackerras Fellow at ENO by working alongside his mentor, Mark Wigglesworth, on Richard Jones's new production of Mozart's dark comedy. MATTHEW ANNOUNCED AS THE JOINT RECIPIENT OF THE ENO SIR CHARLES MACKERRAS FELLOWSHIP

From August 2016, Matthew will take up a Fellowship at English National Opera. Amongst other opportunities, he will assist on productions, travel with, and be mentored by, Mark Wigglesworth, and have the opportunity to make contacts on the international opera scene.

 

Mark Wigglesworth said: “The English National Opera and the Loubser Foundation partnership is unique in enabling seriously gifted conductors a real opportunity to develop. The panel was unanimous that both Matthew Waldren and Toby Purser revealed the right combination of potential and skill to benefit from this amazing opportunity, and so sharing the Fellowship was the inevitable and exciting outcome of this year's audition process. I look forward to welcoming these two exceptional talents to English National Opera.”

 

Matthew Waldren said: "Having assisted at ENO last year, I am thrilled to have been asked to return to the Company as Sir Charles Mackerras Fellow. MATTHEW TO CONDUCT LA BOHÈME FOR OPERA HOLLAND PARK IN 2016

Matthew will return to Opera Holland Park in 2016 to conduct Stephen Barlow's new production of La bohème. The cast includes Anna Patalong as Mimi, Shaun Dixon as Rodolfo, and Elin Pritchard as Musetta. The orchestra is the City of London Sinfonia. Performance dates can be seen here.

MATTHEW ENDS THE YEAR CONDUCTING CAROLS ON BBC NEWSNIGHT

Matthew conducted singers from Opera Holland Park in a festive rendition of 'Ding Dong Merrily' on the final edition of Newsnight in 2015.

ALICE AT NUMBER ONE IN THE CLASSICAL CHARTS

Matthew's debut album, conducting Will Todd's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland on Signum Classics was released on 29th June 2015. It went straight into the Specialist Classical Charts at Number One, and is receiving radio play on BBC Radio 3. Alice is now available to buy on I-tunes and Amazon.

 

ASSISTANT AND COVER CONDUCTOR AT ENGLISH NATIONAL OPERA

Matthew will assist and cover conduct for Xian Zhang at English National Opera in London on their new production of La Bohème. Matthew begins work in September 2015, and covers performances until late November 2015.

 
ROYAL OPERA HOUSE DEBUT

I am absolutely delighted to be able to announce my debut at the Royal Opera House in November 2015, as part of their 2015/16 season. OPERA LYRICA - La Traviata

May 2015 sees me conduct my first La Traviata for Opera Lyrica at 20th Century Theatre in Notting Hill, London. The cast includes Ashley Catling as Alfredo, Katharine Blumenthal as Violetta, and Leandros Taliotis as Germont. Details can be found on the Opera Lyrica website.

I am absolutely thrilled to annouce that I will be conducting Peter Grimes for Co-Opera Co's 2015 Summer Development Programme. The production will star John Graham-Hall as Peter, and will be directed by Denni Sayers. We will work alongside vocal mentors Kate Flowers, Nuala Willis, Catherine Wyn Rodgers, and John Rawnsley.
